Statistics from The NPD Group prove that the Nintendo Switch was the top-selling console in the US in December 2022, with units sold in the five week period of November 27 to December 31 in that year.
In terms of units sold, the PlayStation 5 was second in December, while the Xbox Series X|S was third. However, when it comes to revenue, the PlayStation 5 was the top performing console, with the Nintendo Switch in second and the Xbox Series X|S coming in third.

In December, there was a two percent year-on-year rise in total expenditure on video games, raising it from $7.43 billion to $7.58 billion. There was a one percent decline in video game content spending, which dropped from $5.60 billion to $5.55 billion. However, video game hardware sales rose 16 percent, increasing from $1.32 billion to $1.53 billion.
So far in 2022, total sales have declined five percent from $59.62 billion to $56.56 billion. Expenditures on video game content have decreased seven percent from $50.83 billion to $47.48 billion, yet purchases of video game hardware have increased eight percent from $6.06 billion to $6.57 billion.
Mat Piscatella, the Executive Director and Video Game Industry Advisor at The NPD Group, noted that U.S. consumers had spent a total of $7.6 billion on video game-related content, hardware, and accessories in December 2022, a rise of 2% compared to the same period the year before. Piscatella also pointed out that despite the drops in spending for both content (-1%) and accessories (-2%), hardware spending had climbed 16%.
In 2022, spending was recorded at $56.6B, 5% lower than in 2021, even with an increase in hardware and subscription content investments. Reasons for the decrease in 2022 spending can be attributed to a lack of availability of console hardware, a limited number of premium releases, and the overall state of the economy.

The video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was the highest-grossing title of the year in its first three months of release and is the top-selling game of 2022.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet rose to second place in its second week, while God of War: Ragnarok fell to third. Both Madden NFL 23 and FIFA 23 moved up to fourth and fifth places, respectively.
The latest release of Need for Speed: Unbound was the most popular of December 2022, starting out in the 8th spot. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII: Reunion entered the sales charts at 10th position and The Callisto Protocol made its debut at 17th place.
The top five highest grossing video games of 2022 were Elden Ring, in second place, Madden NFL 23 in third, God of War: Ragnar ok in fourth and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in fifth.
